Cursor vs Claude Code for solo devs

Quick verdict

It's a dead heat on the card. Both score 86/100 on AI Form Guide. Pick Cursor if you want the agent living inside an editor, next to your files. Pick Claude Code if you already pay for Claude and you're happy in the terminal. The price you already pay probably settles it before the barrier jumps.

Both scores are preliminary. They come from public docs and pricing pages, not from hands-on use, and we'd rather say that up front.

Same total, but they get there by different routes. Cursor picks up a point for being good at its job day to day. Claude Code picks up a point on price and value, mostly because it comes with every paid Claude plan rather than costing extra.

What each one actually is

Cursor is a coding agent that works inside its own desktop editor and also runs in the terminal. When we checked cursor.com/pricing on 15 Oct 2026, individual plans ran Free ($0), Plus ($8/month), Premium ($30/month), Super ($100/month) and Ultra ($200/month), with Teams from $30 per user per month. Prices exclude tax. The catch is in the small print: Plus covers Grok models only. On Premium and above, third-party models are billed separately at API list price. Cloud agents start at Premium. There's also a privacy mode, and when it's on, Cursor says your code isn't used for training.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, and you run it from the terminal or the desktop app. You don't buy it on its own. It comes with every paid Claude plan. Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20/month billed monthly ($17/month on annual) and Max from $100/month. The thing to know is that Claude Code shares one usage pool with your Claude chats, and limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly caps on top. Run a long session in the terminal and your chat window feels it too. For heavy sessions you can switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account.

Who each one suits

Cursor suits you if:

  • you're working in an existing repo and want the agent sitting beside the files
  • you'd rather click around an editor than type commands all day
  • you want to start free and only pay once it earns its keep
  • privacy mode matters to you

Claude Code suits you if:

  • you're already on Claude Pro or Max, so it costs nothing extra
  • you're comfortable in the terminal and want multi-file changes done from there
  • you'd rather have one subscription than two

Neither is a great bet if you're starting a marketing site from a blank prompt with no codebase. Our pages flag that as a watch-out for both. A browser app builder is usually the better runner for that one.

Where each one stumbles

Cursor's plan ladder is wide, and the third-party model billing can creep up on you. Keep an eye on usage if you leave the Grok models. If all you want is a chat window, it's also more tool than you need.

Claude Code isn't a free, unlimited agent, and it doesn't pretend to be. The shared pool is the real limit. A solo dev doing long sessions on Pro may hit the ceiling and end up weighing Max or API credits.

What the scores are based on

Both scores are preliminary rubric scores from public docs and pricing pages, checked 15 Oct 2026, with the prices on this page rechecked 19 Oct 2026. We haven't run either tool hands-on yet. The rubric has seven parts and paid placement isn't one of them (see https://aiformguide.com/how-we-score). On those scores the two barely separate. Your setup does.

Final verdict

For most solo devs: start with whichever you already pay for. If you're on Claude Pro, Claude Code is the free roll of the dice, so give it a fortnight. If you're not paying for anything yet and you like an editor, Cursor's free plan is the cheapest way to see whether an in-repo agent changes how you work. Only pay for both if you've actually found the limits of one.

Both sit at 86/100, preliminary, checked 15 Oct 2026. Prices move, so check the vendor pages before you buy.
