NotebookLM vs Perplexity for research

Quick verdict

These two aren't really running in the same race. NotebookLM (85/100) answers from the documents you give it. Perplexity (83/100) answers from the live web and shows its sources. If your research starts with a pile of PDFs, back NotebookLM. If it starts with a question and an empty desk, back Perplexity. Using both is a sensible setup, not a cop-out.

Both scores are preliminary and reviewed from public docs. Heads up: Google renamed NotebookLM to "Gemini Notebook" in July 2026. Same product, new name. We've kept the NotebookLM name on this page.

NotebookLM wins by two lengths, mostly on price and value and on how well it does its one job. Perplexity is quicker to get going and moves faster as a product.

What each one actually is

NotebookLM is Google's source-grounded notebook. You add your documents and ask questions against that set, and that constraint is the whole feature. According to Google's help pages, the free tier gives you 100 notebooks and up to 50 sources per notebook. Each uploaded source can run up to 500,000 words or 200MB. Usage runs on compute-based limits that refresh every five hours, up to a weekly limit. Paid Google AI plans lift those limits (Plus goes to 100 sources per notebook, Pro to 300). Google says the limits are subject to change, so check the product page before you rely on them.

Perplexity is an answer engine. You ask a question and it comes back with a cited answer from the web, and paid plans let you pick between models. When we checked on 19 Oct 2026, its pricing page listed a free plan, Pro at US$17/month billed annually and Max at US$167/month billed annually. Perplexity's help centre puts Max at US$200 month to month.

Who each one suits

NotebookLM suits you if:

  • you've got a stack of reports, papers or transcripts and need a briefing from them
  • you're studying a document before you write about it
  • you want answers that stay inside your sources, not whatever the internet reckons

Perplexity suits you if:

  • your question is about what's happening out in the world right now
  • you want the sources listed so you can check them yourself
  • you want a quick second opinion with receipts

Where each one stumbles

NotebookLM is the wrong horse for open-web news. It answers from the sources in your notebook. Its Fast Research and Deep Research features can find web sources, but you still pick which ones to import.

Perplexity is the wrong horse for private documents that need to stay in your own notebook. And because citations only help if you actually click them, it's on you to read the sources before you quote anything.

What the scores are based on

Both scores are preliminary rubric scores from public docs, help pages and pricing pages, checked 15 Oct 2026, with the limits and prices on this page rechecked 19 Oct 2026. We haven't run either tool hands-on yet. The rubric has seven parts and paid placement isn't one of them (see https://aiformguide.com/how-we-score). The gap here is about the job, not the quality: one answers from your files, the other from the web.

Final verdict

For research from your own material, NotebookLM is the odds-on pick. It's free to start, it stays inside your sources, and it scores 85/100. For research that starts on the open web, Perplexity at 83/100 is the right runner, because it shows its work. If you do both kinds of research, find your sources in Perplexity, then drop them into NotebookLM and question them properly. That combo costs nothing on the free tiers.

Scores are preliminary, checked 15 Oct 2026. Limits and prices change, so confirm them on the vendor sites before you pay.
